Monday 02/28/2011

After a couple of inches of snow last night, it was a beautiful and sunny morning. Not a cloud in the sky. Temps were going to get into the high 30s and low 40s. The one negative was the wind. It was blowing both at the bottom and top of the mountain. As I was skiing downhill, the wind stood me straight up and almost stopped me. The wind also created some strange clouds. Hopefully, tomorrow the wind will not be as bad.

Sunday 02/27/2011

It was a little sunny today. After church we went to the Keystone Nordic center to do snow-shoeing. The trails are marked with VERY small orange ribbons that sometimes blows away. These are the only trail markers. As you go along the trail, sometimes you see Moose and signs to watch for BEARS. The trails are very narrow and if you go off, you may find yourself 4-5 feet deep in snow. By 4pm, the sun disappeared and the snow came back. Maybe tomorrow will be a TOTAL sunny day.

Saturday 02/26/2011

Snow continued thru mid morning but by noon time, you could start to make out the mountains including Keystone ski area. We just did items around the house and went for a walk by the lake. The sun came out by 3pm and the snow quickly melted on the roads. However, the one thing that needs to be watched is the refreezing of all of the melted snow. Conditions quickly go downhill. Hopefully Sunday will be a sunny and nice day.

Friday 02/25/2011

The snow continues. It has been snowing since 12:30pm yesterday and the forecast is the snow to continue thru Sunday. The snow has made conditions excellent. Power, power and more power skiing. You slide thru it and if you fall, it is like falling into feathers, and I did. For those who are counting it was fall number 9. On the Denver side of the mountain, road conditions were horrible due to freezing fog. This happens when there is a NorthEast wind on that side of the mountain. We were expecting many more skiers but there wasn't. It was like a regular week day. I am sure that the weekend will be crowded.

Thursday 02/24/2011

Today was a day of sun, wind and then snow. Around 12:30 the clouds and the snow moved in. This may be the start of 4 days of clouds and snow. It was windy at Keystone and we were glad we didn't go back to Breckenridge. We only skied about 3 hours today. After we came home, we decided to go to the Dam Brewery for beers and wines - all 1/2 price. We all exchange stories and left the bar at 6pm. Tomorrow will be a wait and see day. See if it snowed.

Wednesday 02/23/2011

Today was another sunny but windy day at Breckenridge. Temps climbed into the low 30s this afternoon. Lunch time crowds were all outside enjoying the sun. Many of the kids were also enjoying their lessons at the Small Tots Park. I guess President's weekend is really President's week. Video is from Base 8 restaurant showing the ski area and snowboarders park.

Tuesday 02/22/2011

This morning it was -1 degrees but it quickly warmed up to +10 degrees by 9am. We decided to go to Breckenridge but it may have been the wrong choice. While it was sunny, the wind was blowing at about 30-35 MPH everywhere on the mountain. We stayed about 4 hours and started home around 2:30pm. The only saving item was that the President's weekend crowds have all gone home. With that all of the gas warming stations were empty of people and we
had them to ourselves. In the restaurant at Ten Mile restaurant they had a pair of VERY old skis from the 1920's. Tomorrow we will go back to Keystone.

Sunday - Monday 02/20-02/21/2011

Sunday was an off day. We went to church, watched kite skiing in the afternoon and then went to JJ's Bar in Copper Mt. We saw many of our Dam Brewery friends enjoying the music of Moe. He really puts on a great show. On Monday, we waited til 11am before we went to Keystone to ski. Many of the weekend visitors were starting to leave and we had much of the mountain to ourselves. It was a sunny, windy and cold day. It was great skiing. We passed by the Kids Topia Adventure park at the top of the mountain. It has a snow castle, tubing park and a ski bike path.

Saturday 02/19/2011 Afternoon

In the afternoon we went to the town of Frisco and went out on snow shoes on their local trails. It was very warm and a light jacket was all that was needed. However, as we returned home around 3pm, the clouds reappeared and snow and wind arrived.

Saturday 02/19/2011

Saturday morning we went to the North Pond Park ice skating ring to watch both girls and boys learn how to play Hockey. They have created about 10 rinks on the lake. After each session, the kids get out with shovells to clean off the ice. They do not use a goalie and instead of using nets, they use small wooden boxes to catch the puck.

Friday 02/18/2011

With snow yesterday and last night, the crowds came out in force. President's weekend is upon us. Hundreds of little kids off from school and hundreds of beginner skiers hit the slopes. It was a good day to start early and leave by lunch time. Also at the top of the mountain was a wedding. Both bride and groom were all dressed up and the bride even had on high heels. With the weekend here, it will be a time to STAY away from the slopes.

Thursday 02/17/2011

What a difference a day makes. Back to the routine of cleaning off the car. It snowed all day and we went powder skiing at Keystone. As it turned out we were the only ones that went skiing today from the crowd at the Dam Brewery. Powder skiing is alot different from normal skiing. We had about 8-10 inches of new snow during the day and the trails weren't groomed. The snow has continued into the night even though you can see a full moon. Snow thru Sunday.

Wednesday 02/16/2011

Today is the last day of the warm temps. Tomorrow, snow and wind is in the forecast. We went to Breckenridge and found the same small crowds as Keystone. At a non-discounted rate of $102 a day, no wonder the cashiers weren't too busy. At the top of the mountain you can see the town below and many of the skiers were relaxing outside enjoying the sun. Tomorrow the conditions will change back to more normal conditions.
